Garden Centre Expo 2024 is an annual business growth event specifically targeted to the UK garden retail market. Our Exec-Chairman, Guy Moreton and Specialist Recruitment Consultants Felicity & Michail had the pleasure of attending this year whilst also hosting a discussion panel, gaining valuable insight from industry professionals.

We interviewed Felicity to gain an understanding of her experience at the Garden Centre Expo 2024.

Q: What did you enjoy the most about the event?

A: The event had a fantastic atmosphere and a really positive energy throughout, which made it enjoyable to be a part of. One of the standout features was the consistency across the stands – it was great to see everyone having similar setups, which created a cohesive look and feel. It was also a fantastic opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals in the industry and finally match some faces to names. I particularly enjoyed the panel sessions, which were not only informative but also provided valuable insights. Being part of one was actually really fun, hopefully, we can host another next year! We walked away having learned a lot.

Q: What did you learn?

A: It was a pleasure engaging with a diverse group of garden retail professionals across the industry, including several senior leaders who brought deep expertise and insights. Our team had the opportunity to host a panel discussion, creating a platform for these industry professionals to share their unique perspectives. One of the most fascinating aspects was hearing how each business cultivates its culture, as each approach was distinct, reflecting the individual values and goals of each organisation. Despite the differences, it was clear that fostering a positive, aligned culture is universally recognised as a vital component for long-term success in the garden retail sector. The insights gained were invaluable, as they showcased the various ways businesses prioritise their workplace environments to drive both employee engagement and customer satisfaction.

Q: Were there any common themes/ trends?

A: There seemed to be a big emphasis on sustainability, business growth, and well-being. Key themes included eco-friendly technology for reducing environmental impact, such as solar and renewable energy options. Business transformation was also central, with insights into staff retention, digital solutions, and operational efficiency aimed at adapting to modern challenges. Additionally, wellness and outdoor living products received significant attention, aligning with trends in garden retail that cater to relaxation and mental health. The expo’s panels and networking events allowed industry leaders to share innovations and best practices across the sector.

Q: Was it busier or quieter than you expected?

A: With it being the first year that the Garden Centre Expo had opened it attracted a diverse audience that included owners, senior managers, and decision-makers from national and regional garden centres as well as independents. We felt that the talks and panels were well attended with the theatres always looking busy and full up. I know a few people thought it was a little quieter than usual but hopefully, as the years go by the show will get busier and busier.

Q: As first-timers attending, what did you think of the event?

A: From our perspective we found it incredibly beneficial. Of course, as it’s the first year it’s been run there are bound to be a few teething problems which is natural. However, we enjoyed putting faces to names and getting to connect with people we may not have met had we not attended. We will definitely be back next year!

Q: Can you summarise the panel session and what was spoken about in this?

A: We hosted a panel session focusing on culture and promoting wellbeing within garden centres. It was really interesting to hear what great things two separate businesses were doing. They both had different but brilliant ways of working. It was great to learn that there are garden centres out there that will develop people even if they don’t want to progress down the management route and there is always something new that employees can learn and get involved in.
